Dr Hughes’ medical training took place at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Medical School, where he also gained a BSc with First Class honours. Following this he undertook specialist training in clinical oncology on the Pan-Thames training rotation. During this time he spent two and a half years as a research fellow developing novel radiotherapy techniques for the treatment of lung cancer and is still part of a research team introducing new technology into lung cancer radiation planning. He now works as a Clinical Oncology Consultant at Guy’s & St. Thomas’ Hospitals, where he is the Lead for Clinical Oncology research and development. His main clinical interests are in urological and thoracic malignancies, for which he has weekly clinics both at Guy’s & St Thomas’ Hospitals, and South London Healthcare NHS Trust.
Dr Hughes’ research interests include tumour motion, radiotherapy dose escalation and the combination of novel agents with radiotherapy. He has been involved in several clinical trials in this field and is on the Trial Management Group for two UK multicentre trials. He has published over 20 papers and abstracts. He has also been an active member of the Oncology Section of the Royal Society of Medicine for over 10 years, and is President of the section for the 2011-2012 Session.
